Yle airs new Moominvalley animation series around Christmas 2018

First glimpses of new international Moomin series are aired in Finland and UK around Christmas 2018.

Gutsy Animations, the Finnish production company behind Moominvalley, has signed a cooperation agreement with the British television channel Sky One. Moominvalley will be aired in Britain as a Sky One original production.

In Finland, Moominvalley is an Yle original production, with Yle as a co-producer and the first buyer of the series.

The new animated series and its production were also highlighted at the annual MIPCOM trade show held last week in Cannes in France.

The Moomins are brought to life by the Finnish animation studio Anima Vitae, and the series is being developed together with Yle Drama. Yle will air Moominvalley in Finnish and Finland Swedish during the spring of 2019.

“The Moomins are a national treasure and captivate audiences of all ages. We are pleased to be able to share the experience not only with the Finnish public, but with the world. This is a project involving true top talents in the industry. The timeless themes of the Moomins will be brought to life in a way, that makes them meaningful for people today, children and adults alike,” says Lauri Kivinen, CEO of Yle.

The Finnish cast of Moominvalley will be announced in spring 2018.

New voice talents have joined the English production. Bel Powley will voice Little My and Edvin Endre, known from the series Vikings, will be Snufkin. Comedian Joe Wilkinson will lend his voice to the Hemulen. Previously announced cast members include Rosamund Pike, Taron Egerton and Kate Winslet.

Moominvalley is very much a Finnish-British collaboration, with a UK team that includes the Oscar-winning director Steve Box and Emmy-winning writing duo Mark Huckerby and Nick Ostler.
